The S&P 500 retreated 1.3 percent to 1249.64 at 4 pm New York time. The benchmark gauge erased its 2011 gain and fell below its average price of the past 200 days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 139.94 points, or 1.1 percent, to 12151.41 today.
