Official media organisations on the mainland are struggling to compete with commercial websites, according to an expert in the sector in Beijing. Commenting on the announcement, earlier this month, that the website of People’s Daily, the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party, intends to list in Shanghai to raise 527 million yuan (HK$ 649 million), Qiao Mu, a professor at Beijing University Foreign Studies University, said "more official news online portals can be expected to follow suit."
